Samsung to Resell and Support Sonus' Industry-leading VoIP Infrastructure Solutions to Wireless Service Providers Globally

SEOUL, Korea and CHELMSFORD, Mass., January 11, 2005 Samsung Electronics Company, Ltd., a global leader in telecommunication, semiconductor, digital media and digital convergence technologies, and Sonus Networks (Nasdaq: SONS), a leading provider of voice over IP (VoIP) infrastructure solutions, today announced a partnership that will facilitate the transformation of the world's wireless networks to VoIP. The companies have entered into a non-exclusive global reseller agreement through which Samsung will sell and support Sonus VoIP solutions to mobile operators around the world.

This partnership combines the strength of Sonus' industry leading VoIP technology, including the GSX9000TM Open Services Switch, and Samsung's expertise and technology in mobile networking to deliver a best-of-breed solution that enables a full range of wireless applications and services. This relationship further expands Sonus' reach into the global wireless market and enhances Samsung's VoIP strategy including providing a migration path to an all-IP wireless network.

"As wireless operators continue to experience growth in both subscribers and data traffic, they are accelerating their migration to next-generation wireless voice networks," said Hassan Ahmed, chairman and CEO, Sonus Networks. "Our partnership with Samsung leverages Sonus' proven VoIP technology to deliver a next-generation wireless solution that enables integrated multi-media services in addition to realizing reductions in operating costs."

"To meet various requirements of service operators in the rapidly growing VoIP market, Samsung realized the importance of establishing a partnership with industry pioneers like Sonus Networks. And Samsung will extend our business capabilities in Telecommunication System market continuously through these kinds of partnership," said Seyoung Oh, vice president of planning team, Telecommunication System Division, Samsung Electronics.

"Service providers are looking to develop new and innovative services to increase their revenues. It is critical for operators to migrate to an IP-based network so that they can combine voice and content to create these sticky applications," said Philip Marshall, director at the Yankee Group. "This demand has fuelled the market for mobile VoIP equipment to grow significantly with service providers worldwide looking to implement solutions, whether it is for converged offerings or for efficient next generation services. Partnerships such as the one between Sonus and Samsung demonstrate a commitment in offering an end to end solution to facilitate integration issues and expedite deployments."

Sonus has established itself as a market leader of VoIP infrastructure solutions with deployments in service provider networks worldwide. In Q3 2004, Sonus' leadership position was reaffirmed by leading market research firms who named it the market share leader in several segments of the carrier VoIP equipment market in market share reports for the quarter. Earlier this month, Sonus announced that in December 2004 alone, service providers globally reported that they are now carrying an estimated 10 billion minutes of customer traffic per month on their Sonus-based VoIP networks. The worldwide traffic milestone represented a significant increase from the estimated 6 billion minutes per month in December 2003.
