Matsusaka CATV Leverages Ribbon Optical for 100G DCI

Challenge

Matsusaka Cable Television Station Co., Ltd. (MCTV) has been delivering reliable cable TV and broadband internet to approximately 70% of households in its service area since 1991, following its establishment in 1990. Mie Prefecture has one of the highest cable television penetration rates in Japan, and by April 2003, a cable television network had been established in all cities and towns within the prefecture. Furthermore, a network has been established among the various cable television companies, and this network is used by government agencies and other organizations.  In 1999, MCTV recognized the growing demand for broadband internet access among its subscribers.  To address this need, MCTV launched high-speed broadband services to its subscribers. Through this initiative, Matsusaka is committed to bridging the digital divide in its communities and empowering its subscribers with reliable and efficient internet connectivity.  To ensure reliable and scalable networking capabilities, MCTV needed a scalable DCI solution to connect their head-end location to their local Shima Service Center site to aggregate multiple GbE and 10GE traffic to 100G protected and Bi-directional DCI links.

Solution

To ensure reliable and scalable networking capabilities, MCTV selected a network solution from Ribbon Communications. After thorough evaluation, the company opted for Ribbon's Apollo 9603 and 9901, known for its exceptional performance in aggregating 1 GbE and 10GbE to 100Gb DCI connectivity. This state-of-the-art optical networking platform delivers high-performance, cost effective, and robust head-end to access optical networking solutions meeting the demanding needs of MCTV's network infrastructure. With this cutting-edge technology in place, MCTV can confidently support its growing broadband internet operations without any compromise on performance or stability. The decision to partner with Ribbon Communications reflects its commitment to providing its members with a dependable and scalable network that can keep up with their evolving needs. In this project, support for the design, construction, and implementation was provided by our partner, Uniadex Co., Ltd.MCTV has greatly benefited from the implementation of a scalable optical aggregation network. The network was built to be highly scalable, capable of aggregating multiple 1 GbE and 10GbE services that are required today and any advanced applications that may arise in the future. This will not only enhance their customers’ experience but also ensure that MCTV stays ahead in a constantly evolving technological landscape.

Matsusaka CATV Network Configuration

Benefits to Matsusaka CATV of Ribbon’s Apollo 9603/9901 for DCI:

  • 100G bi-directional application on a single fiber in a compact footprint
  • For MCTV’s head-end location, the Apollo 9603 delivers a compact, high-density optical platform that delivers low cost per bit at the edge while supporting scalable 400G/800G growth. Its modular, open architecture enables right-sized deployments, multi-service consolidation, and seamless integration into disaggregated networks—reducing cost, complexity, and future upgrade risk.
  • Short lead time for both equipment delivery and installation & commissioning which is key in today’s optical supply chain constrained environment.
