CITIC 1616 Selects Sonus Networks For Next Generation Network Transformation

Fast Growing Hong Kong Based Wholesale Telecom Service Provider Chooses Sonus For Its All IP Migration

WESTFORD, Mass., July 22, 2009 – Sonus Networks Inc., (Nasdaq: SONS), providing network transformation through IP communications technology, today announced that CITIC 1616, one of Asia’s leading telecom services providers specializing in wholesale services, has chosen Sonus to transform its network with next generation IP technology. The new IP-based network will enable greater capacity and efficiency leveraging the platform’s centralized routing, diverse media support and secure border control for cost effective IP peering.

Sonus Networks Global Services team will design and deliver a next-generation network to support the CITIC 1616 network’s expanding base of over 350 telecom network operators in 60 locations worldwide. The project will provide seamless migration to a SIP core and manage the legacy ISUP connections while supporting the multitude of international standards currently in use by CITIC 1616’s diverse customer base.

"As we upgrade our network, CITIC 1616 will be even better positioned to capture new customers in China, Asia and Europe,” commented Mr. Sutton Cheung, Chief Technology Officer of CITIC 1616. “Our team undertook a rigorous selection process, considering most of the global network vendors including those in Asia. We were impressed by Sonus’ robust centralized routing capabilities and their ability to provide session border security and media gateway capabilities with the same infrastructure. We support a diverse group of wireless and wired operators worldwide, so our network has to be compatible with a variety of signaling and media types."

CITIC 1616 offers voice services, mobile SMS and other value added services such as signaling transit, prepaid roaming and VAS applications, data service and telecom solutions to telecom carriers, mobile operators and ISPs. Sonus is deploying a next generation network that will centrally manage policy and routing on the CITIC 1616 network, supporting legacy TDM and next generation IP traffic on the same implementation. As their wholesale customers move toward IP environments, the CITIC 1616 investments in Sonus gateway hardware will transition to IP session border security and media transcoding.

"CITIC 1616 is one of the most admired next generation service providers in Asia," commented Mohammed Shanableh, vice president, worldwide sales for Sonus Networks. “Moving to an all IP core for voice services will allow CITIC 1616 to get enhanced services into the market more quickly and enable it to stay ahead of the competition, not only in China, but across the world.”

The network will be made up of the GSX9000™ Media Gateway, PSX™ Call Routing and Policy Server, SGX™ Signaling Gateway, the Sonus Insight™ Management System, as well as the Sonus Network Border Switch (NBS) for enhanced border security and advanced IP peering capabilities.
