GENBAND Backs GSMA's Global Voice over LTE Initiative

February 16, 2010, Barcelona, Spain – GENBAND, Inc., a leading developer of next-generation IP infrastructure solutions, today announced its support for the GSMA Voice over LTE (VoLTE) Initiative as a standard way of delivering voice and messaging services for Long-Term Evolution (LTE). The initiative is based on the principle of a single, IMS-based voice solution for next-generation mobile broadband networks.

“As operators prepare for the transition to LTE, they need a VoLTE solution that is based on a single common industry standard,” said Mehmet Balos, Chief Marketing Officer of GENBAND. “IMS offers operators a solution that meets the stringent requirements for the delivery of voice and SMS while allowing them to offer rich communication services. As a leading provider of interconnect solutions that support GSMA’s IPX and RCS initiatives, GENBAND stands behind GSMA’s VoLTE solution and supports the development of GSMA specifications that will enable interconnection and international roaming between LTE networks.”

GSMA’s VoLTE initiative enjoys broad support from key tier 1 telecommunications operators. Based on a common recommended feature subset of IMS, the GSMA initiative focuses on expanding the backing for VoLTE across the whole mobile ecosystem, including vendors, operators and other standards organizations, while encompassing roaming and interconnect interfaces. The GSMA approach also opens the path to service convergence, since IMS is able to simultaneously serve broadband wireline and LTE wireless networks.

According to Pyramid Research, voice and SMS revenues constitute an estimated 86 percent of the mobile industry’s services market, requiring operators to develop a viable voice strategy as they move to LTE. GENBAND’s IP gateway solutions currently enable a broad range of voice migration scenarios designed to protect service provider investments and support the development of next generation networks.

GENBAND has an extensive voice product portfolio, including the recently announced Interconnection Solution for the seamless migration of voice traffic for mobile operators. The company also offers an IMS product portfolio that supports legacy access migration, IP access, media adaptation, IP interworking and PSTN interconnection, with significant traction with tier 1 operators worldwide.

GENBAND is showcasing its IP solutions at Mobile World Congress 2010, a premier industry event held in Barcelona, Spain, February 15-18, 2010, in Booth 2B90 (Hall 2).
