WESTFORD, Mass., – Sonus Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: SONS), a global leader in SIP communications, today announced Smarttel Technologies Limited, a Bangladesh-based international carrier wholesale operator, is deploying the Sonus SBC 5100 Session Border Controller (SBC) as the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) interconnect platform for its global network. The Sonus SBCs are being deployed at Smarttel interconnect borders – demarcation points where two networks meet – to secure the network borders as well as monitor and enforce service levels. This is Smarttel’s first deployment of Sonus SBCs and is also the first time Sonus SBCs have been deployed in Bangladesh.
Established in 2003, Smarttel has a global customer base ranging from major carriers and service providers to calling card operators, resellers and call centers. Smarttel terminates calls into international gateway carriers, the local public switched telephone network (PSTN) and Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) networks. The company has more than 300 interconnect partners worldwide.
The Sonus SBC 5100 combines security, media switching and transcoding services in a single scalable device and is designed to provide an intelligent interconnection between Smarttel and its partner networks. The Sonus SBC 5100 delivers 250 to 10,000 sessions on a single server. Smarttel selected Sonus to secure its network borders, enforce quality of service policies, traverse intermediate network address translation (NAT) and firewalls, ensure regulatory compliance, deliver the essential transcoding of media and provide codec, dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) and fax interworking.
