It doesn’t exactly require a certified social scientist to figure out that the confluence of ultra-high-speed broadband, highly functional intelligent portable devices, and the resulting rise of the Internet as the preferred delivery medium for entertainment and communications has profoundly impacted society.

Given the emphasis humans now place on near-ubiquitous access to other humans and digitized information, the moniker the “Connected Age” seems to appropriately capture the essence of the current zeitgeist.

The combination of rapidly evolving technologies, soaring customer demands and the steady encroachment of Internet-based competitors into lucrative revenue sources are straining the ability of traditional service providers to retain their century-long status in the communications value chain.

Narrowband?  Who is talking narrowband or TDM these days?  When it comes to narrowband voice services over the last two decades, there has been little to talk about.  ARPU declined as toll revenues disappeared, and revenue has been declining as voice lines continue to decline. 

Since Internet-based service providers, better known as Over the Top (OTT) players, emerged as potential revenue threats to operators a few years ago, the telecommunications industry has struggled to place OTT entities in the proper competitive context.

Operators have devoted massive investment and attention to transforming their networks to converged IP architectures but, before the entire dream of an all-IP environment can be achieved, they must address the risks associated with their legacy TDM networks. It is all too easy to imagine an IP transformation that will happen overnight with the flip of a switch.
