NOTE: This is Part 2 of a 2 Part series covering the vulnerabilities in today’s mobile networks and how service providers can address them.

In the first part of this blog, I discussed the pervasiveness of mobile devices and some of the security vulnerabilities facing mobile service providers. In Part 2, I will describe in more detail the security challenges that many mobile network operators face and offer practical solutions regarding how they can address them.

GSMA Intelligence estimates there are 8.6 billion mobile connections, including licensed cellular IoT devices in the world today. Moreover, there are approximately 5 billion unique mobile subscribers, or over two-thirds of the world’s population.  All of this equates to 1.7 devices per unique subscriber and this figure is growing every day. Wow!

Open Telecom initiatives continue to grow, as the benefits of belonging to NFV ecosystems are so compelling: working together, private cloud infrastructure, software and systems vendors are helping service providers "future proof" their networks and improve service agility, while avoiding vendor lock-in and continuing to build the basis for the development and launching of new and innovative services.

Hundreds of companies offer WebRTC solutions for enterprise communications, collaboration, and embedded voice, video and messaging features on web pages and in mobile apps. As WebRTC continues to mature, what large enterprises need from their Communications Services Providers (CSPs) – companies like Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, BT, Orange, Telefonica, Vodafone and other global and national network operators – are solutions that pull through their “carrier class” redundancy, scalability and security.
