While M-Commerce has been all the rage over the last ten years, “M-Customer” is a term I’m coining in this column to describe customer engagement experiences through mobile devices. The innovation here has just begun and is closely linked to M-Commerce but pertains as much to customer retention and loyalty as it does to making the initial sale.
Earlier this year, I was blessed to be introduced to Dr. David Rhew, Chief Medical Officer of Samsung, when he delivered a keynote address at GENBAND’s Perspectives14 customer and partner summit in Orlando. I was drawn in to his vision for wellness enabled by such innovations as Samsung’s Gear Fit device, and Life Fit application embedded into the Galaxy S4.
Question: What do Google, Telefonica, Cisco, Oracle, Yahoo, Fidelity, Snapchat and now Blackboard have in common?
Answer: They have all acquired or financed companies that offer Web Real-time Communications (WebRTC) solutions. Comcast, Amazon and NTT are a little different, they have chosen to build instead of buy.
As the participation in the Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) domain continues to rapidly grow, it was getting difficult to keep straight which companies played in what aspect of the overall NFV landscape and architecture. Out of that murkiness was born this NFV landscape view as an attempt to visually represent participation in the movement.
With billions of dollars being directed toward the virtualization of network functions through more sophisticated and scalable software solutions, making the processing and management of sessions increasingly efficient, and real-time communications more profitable – where is the real upside for service providers and enterprises going forward?

Will this drive even more useful, entertaining and sophisticated experiences, fanning the flames on the already red hot mobile ecosystem? Most definitely. Is the very definition of the mobile ecosystem changing, even as the real-time communications industry moves up into the applications layer with more “software everywhere?” Roger that!
