Cloud Native - What's It All About?

December 7th, 2022

The term “cloud native” gets tossed around a lot, as it’s the prevailing direction that software development is heading, but what does it really mean? One definition comes from the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, which states:

Cloud native technologies empower organizations to build and run scalable applications in modern, dynamic environments such as public, private, and hybrid clouds. Containers, service meshes, microservices, immutable infrastructure, and declarative APIs exemplify this approach.

Ribbon has recently put together a nice primer on cloud native. It provides some background and framework on things such as microservices, Kubernetes, and containerization. Later in the paper we discuss how Ribbon has moved our session border controllers to a cloud-native architecture and what advantages that creates.
