Motorola and Sonus Networks Combine Technology to Make End-to-End Packet Voice Solution Available

Industry leaders Motorola Broadband and Sonus Networks conduct live interoperability demonstrations at SUPERCOMM 2002

HORSHAM, Pa. and WESTFORD, Mass., June 5, 2002 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) Broadband Communications Sector and Sonus Networks (Nasdaq: SONS) today announced that the two companies are working together to make a comprehensive packet voice solution available for broadband network operators. This solution is designed to drive the implementation of voice over IP (VoIP) in broadband cable networks, enabling operators to differentiate themselves by offering advanced voice services.

The Motorola/Sonus end-to-end packet voice solution draws upon the extensive capabilities of two industry leaders – Motorola providing advanced IP access network solutions and Sonus providing telco-grade packet voice infrastructure products. This combined technology offering makes it possible for broadband network operators to deploy a robust, completely interoperable cable telephony solution designed for rapid deployment in HFC-networks targeting PacketCable compliance.

Motorola and Sonus are demonstrating their packet voice solution this week at SUPERCOMM 2002, held June 2 – 6 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia. The two companies will conduct live interoperability demonstrations at Sonus Networks' exhibit (SUPERCOMM booth #32316). Motorola will feature its Broadband Services Router (BSR) family of cable modem termination systems (CMTS) and its CG4500 Series Communications Gateway CPE working in conjunction with Sonus' SMARRT Cable solution.

"Integrated and interoperable solutions are a key driver enabling broadband operators to rapidly deploy advanced IP applications including VoIP services," said Dan Moloney, senior vice president and general manager of Motorola's IP systems group. "By working with companies like Sonus, Motorola can offer fully tested, robust solutions to its operator customers with minimal deployment risk. Armed with this technology, operators can provide their subscribers with reliable cable telephony services that meet or exceed traditional telephony service offerings."

"Cable operators are among the early adopters of packet voice access technologies, and now that the PacketCable standards are in place, they are ready to move ahead in adding telephony services to their offerings," said Hassan Ahmed, president and CEO, Sonus Networks. "The cable market represents a significant opportunity for Sonus, and we are extremely pleased to be working with Motorola to make available the end-to-end solutions that will enable MSOs to truly deliver the triple play – entertainment, data and video – over their IP infrastructures."

Motorola is a leading developer of VoIP technology, providing broadband network operators with high-quality telephony solutions based on proven hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) access network solutions. Motorola's VoIP product offering includes Motorola customer premise equipment (CPE), which serves as a communications gateway so that broadband network operators can offer bundled services to their customers. Motorola CPE supports all standard voice service features that customers expect, such as Caller-ID, call waiting, and call forwarding, helping operators provide an easy transition from traditional telephone service.

In addition, Motorola's BSR CMTS solutions include carrier-class, content-aware CMTS/routers to enable the delivery of tiered data and voice services to subscribers and to support emerging converged services. The BSR 64000 is an award-winning intelligent edge router with an integrated, high-performance Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS). It combines Motorola's proven expertise in RF technology with a state-of-the-art DOCSIS headend solution. With the BSR 64000, operators can deliver converged voice and data services over the HFC network with a scalable, cost effective system that provides carrier-class availability.

A leading provider of packet voice infrastructure solutions, Sonus offers the SMARRT Cable solution, a next-generation packet voice access solution specifically geared to the requirements of cable operators. Sonus' SMARRT Cable supports PacketCable specifications and is compatible with PacketCable-compliant terminal adapters and CMTSs (Cable Modem Termination Systems). The SMARRT Cable solution comprises the Insignus Call Management Server (CMS), the Insignus Media Gateway Controller (MGC), the Insignus SGX SS7 Gateway (SG), the GSX9000 Open Services Switch and the Sonus Insight Management System. SMARRT Cable also incorporates other key access voice capabilities, including audio server and voicemail functionality.
