Mobile World Congress is probably THE conference in the technology industry right now, with more than 100,000 people descending on the city of Barcelona for four days to showcase their latest and greatest. It has become so much more than a “MOBILE” conference. This year, I had the privilege of attending the show again to really get a feel for what’s hot in the industry and where things are going.
If you find yourself more frustrated than ever while on a call or conference bridge…when you cannot quite make out what a participant is saying…when you are sharing your ideas only to learn a few minutes later your voice was barely legible…you’re not alone.
We are seeing accelerated adoption of two transformational trends in the real-time communications industry – VoLTE (Voice over Long Term Evolution) and NFV (Network Functions Virtualization). One of the keys to understand where to invest, how much to invest, and how soon to invest for mobile network operators is that this is not just about voice.
I can’t believe we are already approaching the month of August. The first seven months of 2015 sure went by quickly, but have been filled with a ton of great activities and milestones for GENBAND, Kandy and the fring Alliance.
I can’t believe it has already been two years since I took over as CEO of GENBAND.
A lot has happened in the past 24 months and while I always try to look forward and ensure that we as a company are well positioned for the future, in this case I think it is worth a retrospective look back to acknowledge some of the milestones that my team has been instrumental in helping us achieve during this period.
The mobile market place is undergoing major shifts and mobile carriers are facing major challenges in staying competitive in delivering services, and scaling their networks efficiently. Voice and SMS are commoditized, and the revenues are shifting from voice to data while the combined revenue of voice and data is not able to keep pace with the rising cost of delivering mobile data. VoLTE and RCS investments, while visionary, are not making a positive impact on top and bottom lines fast enough.
In just a few short years, the communications industry has been turned on its head. While traditional telecom operators often defined the manner in which subscribers would communicate – voice or SMS, for the most part – end users are now much more influential in calling the shots.
