GENBAND Introduces Packet Access Gateway for the G9 Platform

Industry Leading Packet-to-Packet Mobile Access Gateway Designed for Femtocell Deployments

PLANO, Texas-March 25, 2008-GENBAND Inc., a market-leading developer of next-generation IP gateways and application solutions, today announced its G9 Converged Media Gateway(TM) has been enhanced with innovative packet-to-packet mobile access gateway capabilities. The Packet Access Gateway addresses the growing demand for packet-specific technologies in femtocell deployments, allowing service providers to bring better and faster network coverage to mobile consumers at home and at work. GENBAND's Packet Access Gateway will debut at CTIA Wireless 2008, April 1-3, in Las Vegas, at Booth 6365.

Enhanced with functionality for global femtocell deployments, the Packet Access Gateway is the company's latest product innovation to drive the evolution of broadband and mobile networks by providing packet interfaces, vital mobile features, and signaling conversion in mobile access networks. Essential G9 features for femtocell deployment include its transcoder-free operation, packet-to-packet interworking, a signaling gateway and mobile access side capabilities, enabling optimal network performance and voice quality. These and other Packet Access Gateway features make the G9 platform a crucial network element for service providers to improve mobile coverage in office buildings, homes, and other facilities.

"Designed for 3G networks, Packet Access Gateway for G9 complements GENBAND's comprehensive gateway portfolio with features that enable mobile operators to cost-effectively deploy femtocell, WiMAX and WiFi access--with a smooth migration path to 4G networks," said Mehmet Balos, Chief Marketing Officer, GENBAND. "With this pioneering packet-to-packet mobile access gateway for femtocells, GENBAND continues its leadership in the media gateway market."

The Packet Access Gateway is currently in femtocell field trials with multiple top-tier mobile operators. With its integrated high performance signaling gateway, the G9 features cost-effective scalability for both small and large femtocell deployments. As a multi-function media gateway, the G9 lowers network operating costs for mobile and fixed operators and allows seamless connectivity for voice and data services between broadband access and mobile networks.
Compliant with all relevant 3GPP, IETF and other standards, the open architecture of the G9 platform makes it deployable worldwide in femtocell, 3G Release 4 mobile, and other networks.

Optimized for IP network deployment, the G9 platform builds upon the company's first generation system, the 8000 Media Gateway, field-hardened globally for seven years across more than 27 million ports, making it the worldwide market-share leader. Supporting IP, TDM, and ATM architectures, the G9 is the ideal network platform for seamless migration to IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) networks and 4G, without requiring the costly replacement of existing network equipment.

About Femtocells
A femtocell allows mobile operators to extend mobile coverage into office buildings, homes, and other facilities that may have limited access to the mobile network. A femtocell is a small, premises-based base station that directs wireless voice and data traffic to the mobile operator over a broadband connection. This benefits mobile operators by relieving congestion in the mobile network and by improving quality of service. For end users, femtocells address the increasing use of the mobile phone in homes and businesses by providing improved indoor coverage for voice and data services and may reduce charges for minutes used on the mobile network.
