Sonus Networks Selects Timesten Technology For Psx6000 Softswitch
In-Memory Database Expands Subscriber Capacity for Policy-Based Networking
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - March 27, 2000 – TimesTen Performance Software today announced that Sonus Networks, Inc., a leading provider of carrier-class packet telephony solutions, has selected the TimesTenTM In-Memory Database for use in its PSX6000TM SoftSwitch. A key component of Sonus' Open Services ArchitectureTM, the Sonus SoftSwitch has a built-in policy manager, based on TimesTen technology, to centrally manage subscriber services, call processing, and voice quality for packet voice networks. By embedding TimesTen within the PSX6000, Sonus is able to greatly increase the subscriber capacity of their platform, and offer their customers an extremely cost-effective solution for delivering integrated voice and data services.
The Sonus PSX6000 SoftSwitch is a call management server that supports the full range of carrier switching requirements while providing an open approach through which new services can be created easily and implemented quickly. The PSX6000 manages network devices to set up calls across IP, ATM, and circuit networks, and maintains network policy information on services, routing and provisioning, and applies these policies to determine how calls should be handled.
The TimesTen In-Memory Database is used to manage subscriber policy information, including dialing plans, feature information, subscriber profiles, network rules and voice quality parameters within Sonus' PSX6000 SoftSwitch. In addition to real-time performance and scalability, TimesTen's embeddable footprint, high-availability replication, and industry-standard interfaces enable easy integration and continuous operation.
"Our solutions are all built on our standards-based Open Services Architecture to ensure that carriers can quickly develop and deploy new services, gaining a time-to-market advantage," said Mike Hluchyj, founder and chief technology officer, Sonus Networks. "The TimesTen solution met this criteria and also offered the high performance required for use in carrier-class environments."
"We share Sonus' approach to open standards and are pleased to be working with them. As packet telephony is quickly becoming the foundation for integrated service offerings, TimesTen is being chosen for innovative new platforms, like those from Sonus, because it is designed to provide the scalability, performance and high-availability required by these applications," said James R. Groff, chief executive officer of TimesTen Performance Software.
TimesTen 3.7 Delivers for Next-Generation Networks
TimesTen 3.7, the current version, offers an array of features tailored for next-generation network applications. TimesTen is being designed into new voice-over-packet call agents, directory gateways, softswitches, Internet service controllers, call center solutions, and wireless service control points. In these platforms, TimesTen is the embedded database powering real-time, carrier-class management of number translations, call routing tables, call processing, network configurations, call detail records, and subscriber authorizations.
TimesTen advantages include:
- Real-Time Performance. TimesTen delivers off-the-shelf, real-time performance – offering microsecond transaction response times and the scalability to support tens-of-thousands of operations per second.
- Unparalleled Availability. Eliminating single points of failure is key, which is why many solution providers are relying on TimesTen's N-way replication to ensure uptime if any one system goes down.
- Standards-Based Interfaces. In addition to a SQL interface and a standards-compliant, but highly optimized, ODBC API, TimesTen supports a performance-optimized JDBC API – enabling the latest Java-based applications to manage data held within TimesTen.
- Embeddable footprint. TimesTen's unique architecture allows it to be embedded and distributed with the application, with minimal installation and configuration tasks, giving vendors the flexibility to use TimesTen in a range of network configurations.
